IEEE 2883.1-2025 is a “Recommended Practice” document intended to sit alongside IEEE 2883-2022 rather than replace it. More than anything, the 2025 document is designed to give practical methods of applying the technical standards enshrined in the 2022 original.

2 IEEE documents with 2 different jobs 

IEEE 2883-2022 remains the technical foundation for both the IEEE’s guidelines and also now for NIST 800-88 Rev.2, which refers to the IEEE standard. IEEE 2883-2022 defines three sanitization methods, Clear, Purge, and Destruct, and specifies the exact commands and requirements for applying each one across every major physical storage type, from hard drives and SSDs to memory cards and optical media. That document has not changed. 

Instead of revising or updating those original guidelines, IEEE 2883.1-2025 proposes several mechanisms for making decisions about how they might be used. For example, it gives organizations structured ways of deciding which methods to apply based on the risk profile of the data.
