Data Governance Inside the Enterprise: 3 Highlights from Our New Report

We wanted to understand how enterprise businesses are implementing data governance programs, as well as the challenges that come up when implementing these programs. Here are three of eight key findings from our survey of 750 information technology professionals in the U.S. and the U.K.

Today we’re launching a new research study on data governance inside the enterprise. The aim of this study is to understand how enterprise businesses are currently implementing data governance programs and the challenges that arise. Here are eight of the key takeaways from the study, which surveyed 750 IT professionals in the U.S. and UK.

Organizations Are Implementing Data Governance Projects:

• Data governance projects are becoming a bigger priority within organizations. 80 percent of surveyed IT professionals have 1-5 data governance projects currently ongoing in their organizations. Another 12 percent have 6 or more.

Successful Data Governance Depends on Collaboration:

• A successful data governance strategy requires collaboration across departments. Although it’s a good sign that over three-quarters of organizations (78 percent) have a data governance team in place, these teams are still missing from 17 percent of organizations. The following departments are represented on their data governance teams: IT security (70 percent), IT operations (62 percent), compliance (34 percent), legal (31 percent), records management (28 percent) and business representatives (16 percent).

Organizations Will Need to Overcome Certain Challenges to Reduce Risk:

• Uncontrolled user access to data and mismanagement of data storage locations pose serious threats to effective data governance. 53 percent of survey respondents say user access to data is their top data governance challenge, while 43 percent say their biggest challenge is related to managing where data is stored.
