If your drive erasure software doesn’t have the capability to achieve NIST Purge erasure, you’re not meeting compliance with the most secure (and most popular) erasure standard on the market, NIST SP 800-88. NIST SP 800-88 is the most commonly cited publication for data erasure best practices.

Data erasure programs running on a Windows operating system are typically unable to achieve NIST Purge because they cannot remove freeze locks from the machine’s internal drives, whereas a Linux operating system can.
